About the Department

The Department of English Language and Literature is one of the vital departments in the Faculty of Arts. The department was established in 2011. It seeks to achieve a high level of competence and scientific and research ability and keep pace with the most prestigious Arab and international universities. The department aims at attracting competent faculty members and working to develop study plans. To ensure high quality of study materials to keep pace with developments in the field of specialization.

The department offers a bachelor’s degree in English language and literature. The department has always encouraged the scientific level of students. Hundreds of students have graduated from the department. The department seeks at preparing qualified students to play active roles in society through their work in the fields of teaching, translation, proofreading and literary criticism. Moreover, the department is constantly seeking to provide the necessary means that will increase its effectiveness in the areas of development and language skills. It also has a new language laboratory with high specifications and technologies.

Preparing qualified generations with all advanced skills in the field of teaching and research in English language literature and linguistics to achieve academic excellence and create an active and diverse educational and intellectual environment capable of motivating students and contributing effectively to various aspects of development.

Mission

The department’s mission focuses on supporting the university’s overall orientation towards excellence at the regional and international levels by providing distinguished academic programs characterized by creativity in education, scientific research, and cooperative and interactive teamwork in the disciplines of language, literature and linguistics. The Department of English Language and Literature seeks to provide integrated education and training in the field of English language, literature, and theoretical and applied linguistics. It is also interested in developing students’ linguistic, intellectual and research skills to meet the requirements of the labor market.

The department is concerned with encouraging and supporting research and scientific thinking that is characterized by excellence, strength, and integrity, and promoting understanding and communication between cultures. It is keen to provide qualified and trained faculty members to achieve the department’s mission by holding specialized and general courses for members of the local community in English language skills such as reading, speaking, writing, and listening.

Objectives

The Department of English Language and Literature aims to develop students’ linguistic and communication skills by employing theoretical and technical methods so that students can acquire high listening, speaking, reading and writing skills that qualify them to compete in the labor market inside and outside Jordan. It also aims to provide the community with highly qualified graduates in their field of specialization. The following are the general aims of The Department of English Language and Literature:

  1. To provide students with comprehensive knowledge of English language, literature, and linguistics.
  2. Improve students’ critical and creative thinking skills and develop their research abilities in the field of specialization.
  3. Interacting and building partnership with the public and private sectors by conducting studies in the field of English language, providing consultations and holding courses in English language and literature for interested members of the local community.
  4. Enrich the local community through the contribution of faculty members in various activities such as teaching, writing, translating, giving lectures and communicating with various media.
  5. Encouraging a critical understanding of the English-speaking world’s thinking and cultures and opening channels of cultural dialogue with them.
  6. To emphasize the concept of comprehensive quality and continuous development in the department to ensure the effectiveness of the educational process and scientific research.
  7. Developing study programs in line with modern global trends, and developing new programs at the graduate level.
  8. Ensure outputs that have the skills to deal with different cultures and have an understanding of the nature of dealing with other cultures.
